Thomas Telford School employs a full time Director of Careers and Guidance, Miss Hayward and she is supported by a team of part time Industrial Consultants, who are former members of business and industry, to enhance career preparation and work placement programmes for students.

Student Entitlements to Careers Education are set out in a newly updated Careers Policy (copies available in the Careers Resource Centre).

A planned programme of Careers Education providing opportunities to develop and apply the knowledge, understanding and skills necessary to make realistic career decisions.

  • Individual guidance from School Careers and Industry Links staff and advisers for both Y11 and Sixth form students from Telford Connexions 4 Youth.
  • A 'drop-in' Careers Resource Centre with comprehensive and up-to-date information on opportunities in Education, Training and Employment.

Work Placements

Work placements are available with opportunities locally and in mainland Europe through partner schools in France and Germany. All Sixth Form students are given the opportunity to spend up to two weeks each year, either block or part-time, with employers from private and public sectors of industry, commerce and education. Year 11 students, after GCSE examinations, have opportunity for a two week work placement as part of the Year 11 options programme.

Year 10 students will have the opportunity to take part in a one week Work Related Learning activity.

The school also been awarded the Shropshire Excellence in Work Experience award. See Options Pre 16

 

University Programme

  • Use of UCAS website to research University courses. Individual guidance from Miss Hayward and course leaders.

  • Special `one to one' help with UCAS Personal Statements supported by personal tutors.

  • Quality control of every student application form.

  • Grant and loan information evenings for students and parents. Audio (repayment of student loan)

  • Higher Education Week.  Dates: 2 July -  6 July 2012

  • Visit to Higher Education Fair during 6.1.

  • Visit to Oxbridge Fair at Leicester Welford Road Stadium for Sixth Formers thinking about Oxford/Cambridge entry.

  • Up to 4 open day visits to other Universities.

Business and Industry Partnerships

One of the features which distinguishes Thomas Telford School from other Schools is the quality of the partnership shared with industry. Financial sponsorship is a significant investment in the life and work of the School, but employers also make major contributions to the design, delivery and assessment of the curriculum.
